Tips for getting your avatar under 6KB....

In GIMP after resizing go:
image > mode > indexed...
click generate optimum palette and set to 256 .
make sure you export as jpeg .
uncheck "save xmp data" and "save save IPTC data" (not sure if this make a huge difference).
still too big then play ...
